VA Benefits Exam
Assigned by your VA Liason
Service Description
A VA benefits assessment, often involving a Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam, is a medical evaluation conducted by the Department of Veterans Affairs to determine if a veteran has a service-connected disability and, if so, its severity to determine appropriate compensation. The assessment helps the VA decide on disability compensation, including monthly payments and healthcare benefits. What is a VA Benefits Assessment? C&P Exam: A C&P exam is a medical examination performed by a VA-contracted provider to assess a veteran's disability claim. Purpose: The exam helps the VA determine if a claimed disability is related to military service and to evaluate its severity. Evidence Gathering: C&P exams are a crucial part of the evidence gathering process for VA disability claims. No Cost to Veteran: VA provides these exams at no cost to the veteran as part of its duty to assist in the claims process. What to Expect During a VA Benefits Assessment: Initial Review: The VA reviews your initial claim for missing information. Evidence Gathering: The VA gathers evidence, which may include requesting medical records or scheduling a C&P exam. Claim Exam: If needed, the VA will schedule a C&P exam at a VA facility or with a contracted medical examiner. Evidence Review: The VA reviews all submitted evidence, including C&P exam results, to make a decision. Rating: The VA assigns a disability rating based on the severity of the disability. Preparing for a VA Benefits Assessment: Be Prepared: Understand the purpose of the exam and what conditions are being evaluated. Gather Evidence: Collect relevant medical records, including Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) completed by your doctor. Attend the Exam: Make sure to attend the scheduled exam. Be Honest and Accurate: Provide truthful and accurate information about your condition. Don't Over or Understate Symptoms: Be honest about your symptoms without exaggeration or minimization. Important Considerations: Not Every Claim Needs an Exam: The VA only schedules exams if they need more information to decide on the claim. Timeline Varies: The VA disability claims process can take several months, sometimes over a year. Check Claim Status: You can check the status of your claim online at VA.gov.
